Stefano Pierotti

Overview

Born in Pietrasanta in 1964, Stefano Pierotti is a contemporary Italian sculptor whose practice is deeply rooted in the sculptural tradition of Versilia. Known for the expressive intensity and monumental presence of his works in bronze, marble, and iron, Pierotti has developed a language that combines technical mastery with a profound human, civil, and spiritual sensitivity.

Raised in a family closely connected to sculpture and craftsmanship, Pierotti inherited an early familiarity with clay, form, and matter. His great-grandfather, grandfather, and maternal uncle were all esteemed local sculptors, contributing to an artistic environment that would later become central to his identity. After initially pursuing a different path — graduating in aeronautical technology in Pisa and working as a technical draftsman in Turin — Pierotti eventually returned to his true vocation. In the late 1980s, he dedicated himself entirely to sculpture, attending the Art Institute of Lucca and later refining his artistic research through an independent and highly personal path.

From the 1990s onward, Pierotti’s work increasingly turned toward monumental statuary, often marked by a strong social, civic, and symbolic dimension. Among his most significant public works is the Monument to Ayrton Senna at the Imola Autodrome, installed near the Tamburello curve in 1997, where the Formula 1 champion is portrayed in a moment of intimate reflection. His monumental sculpture Do Not Be Afraid, dedicated to Pope John Paul II, stands at the main entrance of the Agostino Gemelli University Hospital in Rome. In Modena, Pierotti created a life-size bronze portrait of Luciano Pavarotti, positioned beneath the portico of the Teatro Comunale. Another important project is Beyond the Roots in Lucca, a large conceptual metal installation outside Porta Sant’Anna, conceived as a living work whose message evolves over time.

Working permanently in Pietrasanta, internationally recognised as one of the world capitals of sculpture, Pierotti’s practice is naturally connected to the exceptional network of workshops, marble studios, and historic foundries that define the territory. His artistic production moves within the same operational ecosystem that has long attracted leading international artists, from traditional foundries to contemporary sculpture studios, reinforcing Pietrasanta’s role as a unique centre of artistic creation and technical excellence.

Pierotti’s original sketches, plaster models, and terracotta preparatory studies are preserved in the permanent collection of the Museo dei Bozzetti in Pietrasanta, an institution dedicated to safeguarding the creative process behind some of the most important sculptural works produced in the area. Within this context, Pierotti’s work stands as a continuation of a centuries-old sculptural heritage, while remaining distinctly contemporary in its emotional force, public resonance, and formal presence.
