Gianfranco Meggiato - L’Uomo Quantico in cammino…Un viaggio interiore lungo la Via Francigena: Solo exhibition in San Quirico d’Orcia, Tuscany | Curated by Domenico Piraina
Oblong Contemporary Art Gallery is pleased to announce its collaboration with Forme nel Verde 2026, Italy’s first and oldest environmental art exhibition, for the presentation of Gianfranco Meggiato. IN ITINERE – L’Uomo Quantico in cammino. Un viaggio interiore lungo la Via Francigena.
Opening on 25 July 2026 in San Quirico d’Orcia, in the heart of the UNESCO-listed Val d’Orcia, the 55th edition of Forme nel Verde will unfold across the town’s most iconic locations: the historic Horti Leonini, the town centre, Palazzo Chigi Zondadari, and the celebrated circle of cypress trees known as the Cipressini.
Curated under the Artistic Direction of Carlo Pizzichini, with a critical contribution by Domenico Piraina, Director of Culture of the Municipality of Milan and of Palazzo Reale, the exhibition places Gianfranco Meggiato’s monumental sculptures in dialogue with one of Italy’s most symbolic landscapes. The project is presented in collaboration with Oblong Contemporary Art Gallery.
The exhibition accompanies an important anniversary: the 1,150 years of the Via Francigena, the ancient pilgrimage route connecting Canterbury to Rome across five European countries. In Meggiato’s vision, the route becomes more than a historical path — it becomes a metaphor for an inner journey, a movement towards consciousness, transformation, and the understanding of the self.
Through his sculptural language, Meggiato explores the figure of the Uomo Quantico: a contemporary human being immersed in complexity, yet still searching for connection, awareness, and meaning. Inspired by the ideas of quantum physics, where nothing exists in isolation and every particle is relation, vibration, and possibility, the exhibition invites visitors to reflect on the invisible bonds between human beings, nature, matter, and spirit.
The itinerary begins in the sixteenth-century Horti Leonini, where a significant group of Meggiato’s sculptures will be installed, before extending into the historic centre of San Quirico d’Orcia. At Palazzo Chigi Zondadari, visitors will also discover an international preview of thirty previously unseen drawings by the artist. The journey culminates at the Cipressini, where Germinazione, a monumental six-metre-high sculpture, will be placed at the centre of one of the most photographed and poetic landscapes of the Val d’Orcia.
With IN ITINERE, Gianfranco Meggiato transforms the act of walking into a philosophical and spiritual experience. The Via Francigena becomes a universal symbol of passage, while sculpture becomes a tool for contemplation — a bridge between art, nature, science, and inner consciousness.
