Maicol Borghetti
Overview
Italian artist Maicol Borghetti is known for blurring the boundaries between photography and sculpture, bronze and video installations in his conceptual, futuristic artworks. A multifaceted and self-taught artist, he was born in Pietrasanta and is now based in Viareggio, where he leads StudioB19.
Borghetti embraces a forward-looking philosophical approach to art, exploring themes of time, human evolution, and what he calls an “archaeology of the future.” Inspired by science fiction, his work often envisions future archaeological relics as metaphors for humanity’s destiny. He investigates the human condition across temporal scales – from individual identity to collective existence – seeking to connect past, present, and future in a continuum.
In his early creative explorations, Borghetti developed his practice through photography, 3D digital design, and short filmmaking, experimenting with new media. This multidisciplinary foundation led him to transform photographic images into sculptural form, casting images in bronze to invite viewers into a multi-temporal, immersive experience. He draws on Versilia’s artistic tradition while looking beyond the present, merging classical techniques with futuristic storytelling.
Since the 2010s, Borghetti has showcased his work in both contemporary art museums and public institutions across Italy. In 2023, he unveiled his immersive project “Exploring the Ego of Time” at the Archaeological Museum of Versilia in Pietrasanta—a complex installation fusing sculpture, photography, video, and electronic music into a futuristic narrative.
Apart from his major projects, Borghetti has participated in numerous group exhibitions and collaborations. His work earned recognition with awards such as the Michelangelo Buonarroti Prize for Sculpture, and his installations have engaged audiences in Rome, Milan, and Paris. Borghetti continues to live and work in Viareggio, creating multidisciplinary art at StudioB19 and contributing to the vibrant art scene of Versilia.
